Accident and Emergency Department at Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur

The Accident & Emergency (A&E) Unit at Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur is well-equipped to handle any injury or medical emergency around the clock every day. At A&E, we have a dedicated team of doctors and nurses who are specially trained for emergency situations, and they will evaluate the situation immediately using the triage method. The most severe cases with life-threatening conditions will be our top priority, while the rest may need a 30-minute wait, depending on the number of patients at the Accident and Emergency centre.

In addition to having a team of emergency specialists assessing and managing your case, a multidisciplinary team of specialists and surgeons are also on-call to attend to complex medical conditions.

Triage & Waiting Time

Our Accident and Emergency department at Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur uses the 5 Level Triage System to sort patients into categories according to the medical urgency. At our accident and emergency department:

  • Priority of treatment is first given to patients who require urgent care.
  • The team will do their best to minimise waiting time for all patients.
  • If you do have to wait, our nurses are always on standby to answer your questions and monitor your condition.

An overview of three category triage acuity systems:

Red Zone (CRITICAL)

  • Acuity

    • Require immediate life or limb-saving intervention

  • Example

    • - Cardiopulmonary arrest, severe respiratory distress, unresponsive collapsed patient
    - severe arrhythmias with signs of hypoperfusion and hypotension
    - severe trauma related patient
    - Acute Stroke

Yellow Zone (High Risk/ Semi Critical)

  • Acuity

    • Requires urgent intervention

  • Example

    • - Altered conscious level, severe head injury
    - Seizures
    - Fractures of long bones of lower limbs/pelvis etc.
    - Open fractures
    - Major bleeding
    - Burns
    - Severe dehydration
    - Severe Pain (Chest or Abdomen)
    - Pregnancy related problems

Green Zone (NON-CRITICAL)

    Acuity

    Less urgent intervention

    • - Respiratory infections

          High grade fever, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, severe pain, severe giddiness.

        What types of emergencies are handled by the Accident & Emergency Department?

          The Accident & Emergency Department act as the first contact point when a patient in need arrives and the Medical Officer on duty will perform basic treatment to stabilize and re-suscitate the patient before referring to the On-Call Medical Specialists.

        What can I expect when arriving at the Emergency department?

          The patient will be directed to the triage area where the front desk personnel will help patient with the registration process before referring the patient to a triage nurse. The triage nurse will triage the patient accordingly.

          Front Counter Personnel → Triage Nurse → Nurse → Resident Medical Officer → Medical Specialist → Pharmacist

          It depends on the patient's triage category.

          Our Accident & Emergency unit does see paediatric related emergency cases.

        Will I be able to receive medical treatment if my insurance provider does not cover me?

          Patients are still able to receive treatment at our facility if insurance does not cover them. Patients will be considered as self paid category where by a patient can pay for the service or treatment by cash or credit card.

        What are the payment procedure at the Accident & Emergency department?

          Payment method: cash, credit card or guarantee letter. If there is a need to be admitted as an inpatient, a deposit of RM600 will be collected for patients under Insurance. For self pay patients, a deposit amount of RM5,000 will be collected or RM12,000 if the patient needs to be admitted into the ICU/CCU.
